Depression

Having depression yourself is one thing, yes it sucks but that's one thing.  However, when you have a child who suffers from it is completely different thing.  It is the most heartbreaking and hardest thing that I have gone through so far in life.  I don't think any child should go through this.  I think my child's depression started when she was young.  I think when one has an absentee dad has a profound affect on one, especially for girls.  Not saying that boys don't have issues with this but they handle it differently.
She realized at a very young age that her dad wasn't there for her like all of the other daddies were for her friends.  I remember her asking why her dad wasn't there and where was he.  I had no clear cut answers, because the answers are too damn difficult to explain to a small child.  Why does everything have to be so difficult?
I think her not having a dad was the big factor in what triggered her depression.  I wish I could take it away and take away the longing she has for a father.  It also doesn't help that she feels like she has all this family she has on that side wants nothing to do with her.  They don't call or text, they haven't called her for her birthday or for any holiday in forever.  That takes a tole on someone knowing that you. have family out there and they don't acknowledge you.  She just wants to be loved and accepted with all her family.
She has been bullied by girls.  They don't seem to like her too much.  There was some cyberbullying going on.  All these factors have come into play with my daughter's depression, PTSD, and anxiety.  The cyberbullying thing I will talk about in another post.
The main point I want to get across in this post is that when a child says they are hurting, they are.  They aren't just wanting some kind of attention, they probably need help.  I know there are many people who think that depression is a choice and they can snap themselves out of it.  I am so sorry but that is not how that works.  It takes a lot of work both from the child or person suffering from it, and the family.  Family is key when dealing with this.  If you don't have the support of the family or friends then sometimes one loses the desire to want to live.
Please take it seriously when they say they want to hurt themselves or no longer want to live.  You never know how serious they are...and wouldn't that be the most horrible feeling when you don't take it seriously and you wake up and they aren't there anymore.  Or that they did something stupid that they can't take back.  I have had to think about that a lot within these last few months.  I take it seriously, because I don't want to live with something that I will regret for the rest of my life.  I never want to outlive a child.  So, yes every single threat or thought that comes to her mind and out of her mouth I will take seriously and do everything in my power to get her through this in one piece.  Please take your kids seriously.
